About Patrick

Higher education changed my life. After graduation from high school, I lacked direction and goals. Although I had some academic interests, they hadn’t been cultivated. My time in college and at the university opened new windows to my understanding of the world and provided me with the ability to do interesting and challenging work.

It is my goal, as interim chancellor, to ensure that students at UW-Stout have the same access to an excellent university education that will allow them to grow intellectually and have a satisfying career. Although higher education is facing unprecedented challenges, I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues across campus to continue to provide an outstanding education to our students.

As I’ve traveled and talked with folks across the state and beyond, I have been amazed at how many people have been touched, in a very positive way, by their experiences at UW-Stout. Clearly, ours is an exceptional institution, and I feel privileged to be given the trust to help steward the university into a bright future.

More details are available in my CV, but a brief summary of my educational background includes a B.S. in Biology and Outdoor Education from Northland College, a Master of Arts in Teaching in Biology from UW-Eau Claire, a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from UW-Madison, and a stint as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Whitehead Institute at MIT. Following my postdoctoral work, I accepted a position at Bemidji State University, and stayed there over 20 years as a faculty member, department chair, Associate Dean and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

My wife Audrey and I have two children. One son, Steven, lives near Dallas, TX, and runs his own insurance company. Our other son, Forrest, is a medical resident at Mayo Clinic.

When we have free time, Audrey and I enjoy traveling. Our recent adventures have included hiking in Acadia National Park in Maine, hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands, and backpacking in the Sawtooth Wilderness in Idaho.

As a Wisconsin native who lived for a long time in Minnesota, I enjoy watching a fuller slate of Green Bay Packer games and eating squeaky cheese curds!
